Designed as enclosures, protection from wind, and privacy screens, Japanese folding screens convey both delicate beauty and rich cultural symbolism. Early Japanese screen artists used paper, gold leaf, ink, and colors to create landscapes, depict mythological and historical events, and represent the four seasons. These screens from the Edo period (1615-1867) are attributed to a painter of the Rimpa School, characterized by a decorative style and an emphasis on literary themes and the natural beauty of the seasons.
